Fine with one lower border stain, framed matted and sealed under glass. Pencil signed and titled "Pont Valentr, Cahors, France". Sight size: 8 1/2" x 11". Donald Frederick Witherstine was born in Herkimer, New York, in 1896, and died in Provincetown, Massahchusetts in 1961. Witherstine was a gallery director who worked in Provincetown, MA, but also a fine etcher, block print maker and a landscape painter. Known for images of dunes as well as architectural and village views. Witherstine's oils show the influence of Cezanne, whom he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia under George Elmer Brown. Witherstine's paintings and works hang in Peoria, Ill. at the Art Institute, Bloomington as well as at the University of Illinois. In 1933 the Society of Artist Allied of America as Christmas gift for its members selected a print by Witherstine. In 1947, Witherstine founded the Shore Galleries, which would later become the South Shore Studios and Gallery 200, which he also directed. Forum 49 was held at Gallery 200 and the papers of this organization were contributed by Sheila Ellsworth Burlingame to the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. where additional information about Witherstine can be obtained from his papers that date between 1936 and 1953.
