Description:
The six mid 19thC paper mache items offered in this one auction lot are all in very good cosmetic and structual condition. No layer separations, no MOP loss, no surface pieces missing and no repairs. Only the plate w/handle has issues, minor. There is the expected MOP paint loss. Included in this group: one very interesting lidded velvet lined box in very good original condition measuring 7 1/8" x 5 1/8" x 2 3/4" tall. One large thin book or magazine cover, measuring 11 3/4" x 9" x 1/2". Some paint loss above the floral urn among the petals. One 6 1/4" x 5 5/8" picture frame, typical of mourning frames. These items were used for mourning because they were black, yet highly decorated. The picture opening front sight size is approx. 2 1/2" x 3". The next item is a daguerreotype frame, 4 13/16" x 3 7/8", retaining it's two-piece brass closure, featuring the word: "TAKEN" on the spine. Dag covers such as this are scarce in this condition. The fifth item is a larger dag cover measuring 6 1/8" x 4 7/8", missing top brass closure tab, with the word: 'MEMENTO" (as in Memento Mori) on the spine. An even scarcer cover for a half-plate dag. The sixth object is a 9 1/2" diameter tray with a gilt brass aesthetic style swing handle. There is some edge loss on this one that is seen only when looking at the underside.
