Description:
ca. Last half 19thC. An original 1850s-1870s Italian grand tour marble specimin and micro mosaic top, complete in and of itself. 5/8" thick, give or take. These were originally created to carry back from abroad an attractive and easy to transport sampling of fine stones possibly needed for building projects, like marble staircases. Eventually these caught on more as decorative objects; no longer were they only "salesman samples". Some earlier 18thC examples do not have inset micro mosaics. Rare in excellent original condition with maybe light surface lines from age. We have not attempted to clean or polish this in any way, and it appears to have avoided this fate for some time now. The minute tesserae appear to be mostly intact; hard to tell on the center mosaic because old grime remains. Once this is cleaned it should pop with color. These do not come up often.
